ASTM E1996-03 Large Missile

Impact Test Standard for Wind Zones

1 & 2 - 120 mph ≤ basic wind speed < 130 mph *

Original Translucent Storm Stoppers® were lab tested on December 21, 2005 at a state-accredited certified testing lab. The tests performed were to the ASTM E1996-03 Large Missile Impact Test Standard, which is described as “Standard Specification for Performance of Exterior Windows, Curtain Walls, Doors and Storm Shutters Impacted by Windborne Debris in Hurricanes.” (Impact Only)

This impact test is designed to simulated an impact from windborne debris in winds up to 130 mph.

The large missile impact tests were conducted using a #2 Southern Yellow Pine 2 X 4' measuring 48" in length and weighing 4.50 lbs (Missile C). The test material was a 65" X 108", 3/8” thick translucent corrugated plastic Storm Stopper® panel.  An adhesive bonding promoter was applied to the Storm Stopper® panel under the 3M Dual Lock™ fasteners.  The material was tested with glass behind the panel and the GLASS DID NOT BREAK AT IMPACT.

The test specimen was fastened to a 65" x 108" white aluminum window frame with 3M Dual Lock™ fastener pairs, spaced 4.5" apart.  Three (3) impacts were done on three (3) separate panels with no penetration.
